Let’s face it – next to their bed, most professionals spend the majority of their time in their office spaces. Whether you work from home, operate from a cubicle, or do a lot of traveling, you spend a good portion of your life in your workspace. So why not make it uniquely yours?
Make a Statement with Your Workspace
Obviously, you have to first consider your company’s culture. If your business is conservative in nature (think: law office) you might want to go easy on the artistic touches. However, if you work for a creative or modern company (think: tech), you’ll likely have more leeway to personalize your workspace.
The interior office construction experts at Emagispace® suggest eight great ways to put your personal stamp on your work environs and simultaneously stimulate your senses: making you more happy and productive overall.
It’s not a wall, it’s a canvas.
Conceal drab, institutional-looking walls with textured wallpaper, craft paper, colorful fabric — or even Astroturf! Secure it with Velcro tape so there is no alteration to the surface beneath. Or, create a unique accent wall with paint.
Act “as if” you have a window.
Create a virtual view instead — hang a piece of art or an enlarged photo that inspires you, like a seascape or an architecturally-significant building. Use lightweight window molding to frame it, and, TA-DA! You have a window your coworkers will envy.
Go green and grow.
Studies show live plants improve your mood as well as air quality, since plants soak up pollutants and give off O2. Don’t have a green thumb? Opt for a low-maintenance plant like lucky bamboo or English ivy. To shake things up, treat yourself to a fresh bouquet every so often. If you are particularly ambitious, a small tabletop terrarium or aquarium will do the trick.
Success lies in the details.
Accessorize your space — framed photos, a figurine, and motivational quotes add visual interest as well as personality to your cubicle. And don’t forget the floor: you can even roll out an area rug to mark your territory.
Adjust the lighting.
A small tabletop lamp or torchiere with a natural-light bulb will offset your office’s harsh overhead fluorescent lighting (and you’ll look better, too!)
Get organized.
An orderly office is a sign of an orderly mind, so keeping your workspace neat demonstrates your professional work habits. Invest in cool hanging organizers, fabric-covered storage boxes, and color-coordinated desk containers.
Bypass the water cooler.
Put out the welcome mat for visitors to your space. Ideas include having a candy dish, a mini coffeemaker, or fun things to play with like stress balls.
Don’t go overboard.
A word of caution: don’t clutter up your desk with too much stuff, lest the higher ups think you’re distracted by all the accessories. Remember: you’re there to work.
